The above weight loss diet plan ensures a slow and comfortable weight loss. This is a 30 day program with a wide range of nutritional meals and calorie controlled snacks. After the 30-day period, follow the maintenance plan as long as you wish. If at any stage you wish to lose more weight, repeat the process starting with the three-day detox diet (explained earlier), the 30-day weight loss plan followed by the maintenance diet.

Ellen's 10 rules for life after 50

What she never does that most people do every day: "I don't take showers; I find them assaulting. I bathe. Sometimes I take two baths a day. And I'm big on bath products: I love Jo Malone Amber & Lavender Bath Oil, and I like the Bliss scrubs."

What she does in the bath that you wouldn't do to your best friend: "I use a hard-bristle brush on my body to exfoliate. You might think it would hurt, but it doesn't. Maybe I have a high pain threshold."

Another thing she doesn't do every day: "I wash my hair once a week; twice a week at most. I don't think daily shampooing is good for your hair."

Just a few of the things she does in bed: "I sleep a lot—about nine hours every night. I always read or watch movies till about 2 a.m. If I'm alone, I might apply a hydrating mask before I get into bed. What she does for exercise: "I work out with [trainer] David Kirsch three times a week. I do weights, floor exercises, sit-ups and push-ups. No aerobics."

And she doesn't do aerobics because… "I'm lazy. And I've never had a weight issue. I gained 50 pounds with each of my two kids, but after they were born, the weight just dropped away and I was thinner than before I got pregnant."

Why she loved being pregnant: "I've never taken up much space. But when I was pregnant, I took up a lot of space."

Why many women might want to kill her: "At any given time, I'd like to gain about seven pounds."

What she never uses on her face: "Acids. I used Retin-A for about 10 years. But now I see Cristina Radu, a facialist in Los Angeles, every six weeks. She took me off all acidic products. (Radu believes that acids make the skin overly sensitive and irritated, and should be used only occasionally.) Now I use a gentle scrub twice a day for exfoliation, and very rich moisturizers in the Cellcosmet skincare line."

Oh...actually...except once every two weeks… "I use Dr. Brandt [peeling system] Laser A-Peel, which, now that I think of it, has acids in it."

What she tried once and will never, ever do again: "Botox. I don't like the way it makes people look. Too many people go overboard, and for an actress, that's deadly. It keeps you from being able to have expressions. Some actresses who used to have a beautiful smile have this weird kind of oval thing they do with their mouths instead. They can't frown anymore, either. They look like they've lost their minds."

Why she hasn't had a facelift: "I didn't get my nose fixed; my whole face is crooked. Any plastic surgeon would look at me and try to even it out, and to do that he'd have to change everything, straighten my nose, make my eyes rounder. I don't want to do that!"

What she would like to have if she knew how to get it: "Just a tighter version of my face."

One of the ways she's trying to get it now: "Thermage [a radiofrequency treatment that's used to tighten skin and encourage the growth of collagen]. I've been having it three times a year for the past three years."

What she thinks it's doing for her: "Really, I don't know. And it's painful—like burning-hot elastic bands snapping against my face. But I keep doing it."

Wait, there's more: "I also have Fraxel [a laser treatment that's used to improve skin texture]. It doesn't hurt, there's hardly any downtime, and I've seen a huge difference in my skin."

Oh, and more: "And every time I have Fraxel, I also have a peel."

Oops, and more: "I've used a filler. But I have it done only here and there, not all over my face. People are having fillers injected into their jaws; they look like squirrels."

So that's it, right? "For now. I'd never say I'll never have a facelift, but I'm way too scared of looking like a different person. I have no philosophical or political position on plastic surgery; I just don't want to look crazy. And I don't like not being able to tell how old someone is: It's creepy."

What her friend Susan Sarandon told her about being an actor and looking older: "She said, 'They'll always need women to play people's mothers. Then those of us who don't have plastic surgery will have jobs.'"

Who she wants to resemble at 60: "My mother."

Actresses whose looks she admires: "Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Meryl Streep, Annette Bening, all those girls who don't play around with their faces."

What kind of bag she's carrying: "Balenciaga."

And what's in it: "My cell phone, glasses—I had LASIK 10 years ago, but it wore off—sunglasses, Airborne [herbal immune booster], Rosebud Salve, my keys, vitamins and an energy packet, my wallet, a lucky eye from my producing partner Caroline Kaplan, and an amulet from each of my kids."

There's no makeup in there? "No, I usually don't wear it. On a regular day, I curl my lashes with a Shu Uemura curler and apply lots of moisturizer. If I'm going out to lunch, I'll use a black Maybelline waterproof mascara—my eyes tear—and maybe a little Chantecaille concealer and Rosebud Salve. No blush because my cheeks are pink enough."

No makeup, even when she's going out to dinner? "If I'm going out with friends, I'll also do my eyebrows with pencil. And if I'm getting really dressed up, I'll smudge a black Stila eyeliner pencil on my upper lid. I also like CoverGirl lipstick, a sheer nude. And Stila glosses, because they stay put, but they're a little sticky if you're kissing. I never wear foundation. Or eyeshadow, unless I'm being photographed."

And what does she carry in a little evening bag? "Powder, because you don't want shine [if you're on the red carpet], and lipstick and maybe a black eyeliner pencil, and my phone. But actually, I try not to carry a bag at all; makeup really stays on my face, so I don't need touch-ups, and it's not like if someone needed to reach me they wouldn't know where I was…"

Is Botox a Shot at Gorgeous?

Millions of women are looking remarkably fresh and rested thanks to tiny injections of a botulinum toxin. Why wasn't Valerie Monroe one of them? O's beauty director develops a few new worry lines.

It's not like my face is that symmetrical or anything—no more symmetrical than yours, I bet—but the idea of doing something to it that even in the slightest way might increase the chance that it could become lopsided? That put the fear of God into me. So I canceled my first appointment with a New York dermatologist who had offered to shoot me up with Botox when I told her I was considering trying it for this story. I called her specifically because I know she has used Botox on herself for years, and she looks fantastic, by which I mean she can smile and frown like a normal person and she has no issues in the facial symmetry department. The day before my rescheduled appointment, I Googled Botox, hoping for motivation. I saw before and after photos of men and women who had (purportedly) had it injected into their foreheads to reduce the lines between their eyebrows. A little note underneath the photos read: "Results may vary." And "Chances are, you'll like what you see!" How much may the results vary, I wondered, and what, exactly, are the chances?

I was late for my appointment (snarled crosstown traffic and…ambivalence). As I sat in the calming, all-beige waiting room, I leafed through a couple of magazines—the way you do in that too-fast, aimless way when you're anxious—thinking about why I had decided to get myself shot. Did I look in the mirror one morning and see something—a wrinkle, a crease, a spot—I couldn't live with? Did I realize that I had lost my youthful demeanor and suddenly wish I could have frozen it in time? No. But it seemed that almost everyone around me—professionally, that is—had tried Botox, and, no doubt about it, many of them looked way more relaxed and less troubled than they probably should have. Plus, none of them were lopsided, or limping around because their legs had gone numb, and, as far as I could tell, their brain function seemed just fine. So I thought, "What the heck; why not go for it?"

In the treatment room, the doctor, gracious and attractive as ever, sat down with me. She handed me a mirror. "So, what do you see?" she said. I looked into the mirror. I saw a very worried face, and told her about my fears. What if my brow drooped from too much of the stuff? What if it leaked into another part of my body? "The treatment is really safe," said the doctor. She told me that she'd been using Botox for many years, on patients and on herself, and had only had good outcomes. She stared at my forehead for a second. "I could get great results for you," she said, and patiently showed me where she would inject me: between my brows and just above them. Four little shots. She might give me a little under the sides of my mouth, she said, where it was starting to look a bit droopy. She told me that I might be slightly red at the injection sites for about 10 minutes, that I should move my forehead muscles for a half hour after the shots to distribute the Botox, and that I probably shouldn't lie down for several hours after the treatment. Move my muscles to distribute the Botox? Don't lie down?

Feeling acutely anxious and at the same time oddly curious, I resorted to an impersonal, reporter-like agenda. As if we were talking about some other woman in the room, I asked the doctor, "What else might you suggest?" "A bit of filler under your eyes would soften the bags," she said. "And your upper eyelids are beginning to sag; if you had an eyelid lift, you would look absolutely fantastic."

I picked up the hand mirror and peered into it again. This time, I looked old, frail, and terminally exhausted.

"All right," I said. "I'll do the Botox."

A nurse appeared with a consent form. I ticked off the boxes, agreeing that various unlikely mishaps, should they occur, were my responsibility. Then, feeling sad and vulnerable and somewhat feebleminded—I had given in, given up, I was damaged by the ravages of age and I needed fixing—I signed the form. I put the pen down. And in that moment, it felt as if a switch went off in my brain, or my heart. "No," I said. "No," I said, "No. I don't want it."

"That's okay," said the doctor, kindly. "That's the right decision for you. Would you like something else?" she said, as if I might find another, less invasive choice from her menu of treatments more palatable. "No, thanks; I'm good," I said. And I fled.

In the cab on the way back to the office, I was both disappointed and happy. Disappointed because I actually would like to see the lines between my brows diminished and I would like to look less tired. And happy because I felt that in a small way I had practiced a kind of acceptance I believe will be valuable to me as I get older. It's hard to come by, this acceptance, especially in my business, and I refute it often: I'll continue to color my hair as it grays; I'll use a retinoid cream to keep my skin in good condition, and probably have some laser treatments. But for now, I won't be injecting anything into my face. Not Botox. Not fillers. You have my blessing to do it if it makes you happy. Maybe it will make me happy one day too.

But it isn't what makes me happy today.

Tips to Avoid Foot Pain from High Heels

Do the most important men in your life—and the shoe boxes in your closet—bear the names Manolo, Jimmy C, Enzo, and Stevie M? If so, then there's a good chance high heels are a part of your life.

But unlike Carrie Bradshaw in TV's Sex and the City—who chased men, taxis, and sometimes a dog in the park while teetering on 4-inch stilettos—high-heeled life in the real world can be a killer.

"Women do love their high heels, but if you wear them all the time, significant foot pain and other problems can ensue, either as a direct result of the heels or exacerbated by them," says Morris Morin, DPM, director of podiatric medicine at the Hackensack University Medical Center.

Problems range from common concerns like bunions, corns, and calluses to more complex issues like misshapen hammertoes or that excruciating pain in the ball of the foot that seems to grow worse with each passing year.

Still, many women refuse to give up their high heels: A survey conducted by the American Podiatric Medical Association showed some 42 percent of women admitted they'd wear a shoe they liked even if it gave them discomfort; 73 percent admitted already having a shoe-related foot issue.

So what's the answer? Doctors say if you must wear them at all, take a few precautions, and catch and treat problems early on. If you do, you'll not only avoid many high-heel problems, but you'll make the time you spend in spikes a happier day for your feet.

High Heels and Foot Pain: What You Should Know

Anytime you wear shoes that are tight or constrict the natural shape of your foot, doctors say it's bound to cause foot pain.

But when you add high heels in to the equation, podiatrist Stuart Mogul, DPM, says pain can quickly escalate to damage.

"In addition to restricting the foot, you are also increasing the weight on the area that is restricted, so you're not only crushing your toes, but you're crushing them and then putting weight on them, and that's a problem," says Mogul.

Among the most common problems he sees are painful, aching bunions—those bony protrusions that usually pop up at the base of the big toe and distort the shape of the foot.

"High heels don't cause bunions, but they sure can aggravate them. Both the heel height and the point of the shoe can play a role," says Mogul.

Moreover, he says some women who have bunions also have a displaced bone on the bottom of the big toe joint, which changes the way the foot "tracks" or acts during motion.

"If the foot is then placed in a high heel, and pitched forward, the pressure on these bones increases and bunion pain grows worse," he says.

While integrating lower heels into your wardrobe can help some, often the best solution is bunion surgery to straighten the bone.

If you're wearing high heels on a daily basis, it's likely you've already experienced two more common problems: corns and calluses. These thickened layers of dead skin usually occur on the toes or sides of the foot and are actually the body's way of defending your feet against assault. Only in this case, says Morin, your shoes are the enemy.

"When you start developing corns and callus, or even ingrown toe nails, pressure from shoes that don't quite fit is often the problem," says Morin.

Other times it can be the result of a "hammertoe"—a condition that causes the bone of the affected toe to curl under, leaving the top to rub against the shoe. When that shoe is a high heel, says Morin, problems and pain are intensified.

While wearing a lower-heel shoe can help some, the solution may require a surgical procedure that helps straighten the hammertoe.

High Heels and Midlife Crisis

It's true that nothing can lift the spirits like a sassy new pair of high heels. But if it seems those heels were a lot more comfortable in your 20s and 30s then they are in your 40s, 50s, and beyond, you're right.

Feet change with age, say experts, and some of those changes can make wearing high heels a lot less comfortable. One of the most common: a loss of fat in the bottom of the foot.

"As you age, you lose some of the fatty deposits that normally protect the ball of the foot—and some of it also slides forward toward the toes," says Morin.

When we slip our feet into those strappy stiletto sandals and step down, he says our weight is thrown on the spot where we have less protection.

"In extreme cases you actually have the bony ends of the foot grating down into the sole of the shoe with almost no protection at all," he says.

Not only does this cause pain, but it may also increase your risk of stress fractures and osteoarthritis in the feet.

And while some doctors attempt to repad the foot using injections of silicone or wrinkle-filling injections like Restalyne, both Morin and Mogul say it's not a good idea.

"These injectables are not meant to withstand the pressure of body weight; they don't last and they tend to move around from the weight," says Morin.

Moreover, the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society warns women against these and other strictly cosmetic procedures for the feet. Calling the trend alarming, they warn consumers that risks—including infection, nerve injury, and difficulty walking—frequently outweigh benefits.

A much better idea for bottom-of-the-foot pain, says Morin, is the use of heavily padded insoles. "They act as a buffer between your foot and the ground, and that's all you really need."

And finally, if you've worn primarily high heels for most of your life, you may experience shrinkage of the Achilles tendon, the area that runs from the back of the heel to the calf. This can result in pain when wearing a low-heel shoe or even the inability to walk barefoot.

The antidote here: Stretching exercises like runners do. In rare instances, Mogul says you may need surgery to lengthen the Achilles tendon.

5 Tips to Protect Your Feet When Wearing High Heels

We know you love your high heels, so we won't even hint at the fact that you'd be better off in sneakers. At the same time, what good is that great pair of red patent-leather stilettos if all you can do is sit and admire them?

If you're going to wear heels, WebMD combined advice from our two experts, along with suggestions from the American Podiatric Association, to protect your feet.

Get the best-fitting high heel possible. While this may seem like a given, stop and think: How many pairs of high heels cause your feet to slide to the front, leaving a gap big enough for a small cell phone behind your heel? Mogul says high heels that don't fit properly cause the front of the foot to fly forward, creating more pressure—and pain—on toes. Look for narrow heels with a snug but not tight fit to correct the problem.
Cushion, cushion, cushion. While a full-shoe insert can help, if you have pain in the ball of the foot—or you'll be standing in your heels a long time—invest in silicone metatarsal pads. They look like flattened gummy bears, but they do a super job of shock absorption, says Morin. "It's like replacing the fat padding you lost."
Wear a thicker heel for stability. "A thicker heel will give you better balance and may help relieve some pressure by distributing the weight on your foot more evenly, says Morin. Alternating heel heights can also help reduce problems with the Achilles tendon.
Pay attention to the "slope" or "pitch" of the heel. While some 4-inch heels will give you a straight drop down to the flatbed portion of the shoe, others will be a more gradual slope. This may be easier on the arch, says Morin, and might help relieve some pain in the ball of the foot.
Wear open-toe high heels to relieve pressure on corns and calluses. See a podiatrist to have corns and calluses professionally removed and correct the problem that's causing them. But if that's not possible, opt for open-toe shoes to take pressure off inflamed areas.

Throughout 2008, women's hair cuts did one thing: they got shorter. There was the bob hair trend, the pixie-crop hair trend, and a plethora of others in between.

And unlike the length of women's hair, their popularity grew.

Which leaves us with an interesting predicament for 2009's hair trends: the fashion forward, short hair styles of 2008 are no longer fashion forward. They're no longer unique. Every woman and her chuiauia got one.

So in 2009, fashion forward girls have a choice to make: keep the bobs and blend into the crowd or, to stand out, cut their hair shorter or let it grow.

The Cropped Bob & The Pixie Crop

Girls who cut the bob in 2008 and want a fashion forward look in 2009, are going to have to either let their hair grow out or go something more extreme. Enter the cropped bob and the pixie crop; both perfect for Spring/Summer 2009, but far more difficult to wear for Autumn (Fall)/Winter 2008/2009.

The Cropped Bob
To put it bluntly: the cropped bob is extreme. It's not quite a pixie crop (below) nor a bob. Short all over, even with a heavily shortened blunt cut fringe, it's can only be worn by those who ooze confidence. Just look at Agyness Deyn's cropped, fringed bob (right). Attention grabbing, it's even far less subtle with peroxide blonde hair which I'm tipping as the best colour to wear it with.

The Pixie Crop
The pixie crop started as a hair trend in 2008 but, as a natural progression from the bob hair cut, expect to see plenty of it in 2009.

For those fashionisers who are willing to really take scissors to their hair, the pixie crop offers a bold look far less subtle than the cropped bob, and one that is both young and funky when done right. And doing it right has everything to do with the styling: as we learnt from Katie Holme's pixie crop a lack of styling and product and you can look suddenly middle-aged.

The Bob

Perhaps both the cropped bob and pixie crop are too extreme for you? Or perhaps you've just got a bob and are eager to keep it. Never fear, the bob hair cut is still in fashion in 2009. It's just not as unique, but paired with the right clothes (check out 2009's Spring/Summer clothes trends here) and hair style you can still own this look.

And what hair styles should you pair a bob with in 2009? If you're bob is chin length, look at sexing it up with the bed hair style, or if your bob is shoulder length also consider an adaptation of the mermaid / 1940s wave style as well as bed hair.

Hair Color Trends For Fall 2008

Hair color offers an instant change to anyone's look. The changes can range from simple and subtle to major and dramatic. Hair color can also impact hair texture since it will instantly add volume to thin, fine strands and may impact curls and waves in some cases. When done properly, hair color can make hair softer and easier to care for or to style.

Did I say Fall of 2008? Yes I did. I received a request from a beauty editor on Wednesday (March 12, 2008) for my thoughts on hair color for Fall 2008 and even Winter 2009.

Geez. That was a hard request. I am just now catching up on what’s happening for Spring/Summer 2008 hair colors.

Yes, I did find the answers to the question of hair color trends for Fall/Winter 2008-2009 but I can’t spill the beans until my editor has a head start to get that written up. But I did spend all day, Thursday (March 13, 2008) holed up in my house doing research by smiling and dialing all my fav haircolor expert friends.

What did I find out?

First of all, hair color trends are driven by fashion catwalk trends and fabrics. Second, home interior design colors also drive fashion and hair color. Yep, that was a shocker when I found out some years ago. One top haircolorist I know visits new home shows to look at wall paper and paint samples to figure out what color trends will be hot for the upcoming season.

A hairdresser friend of mine who is a fabulous hair colorist and curly hair expert told me that when fabrics have a lot of texture, so does hair color. When the fabrics are sleek, silky and shiny then hair texture retreats and sleek comes back in.

She told me she had recently attended a Paul Mitchell class where they talked about new color techniques they will be releasing for Fall 2008/2009 that involves layering warm and cool colors right next to each other.

So what you ask? Yeah, this is BIG news. Why? it’s hard to layer warm and cool together without risking bleeding. Until now. Paul Mitchell has figured out how to do it…which doesn’t surprise me in the least. That company does some amazing things and I love their PM Shines product line. The folks at PM haven’t officially announced their latest line of neutrals YET which will have the N/N tags when it becomes available….but it is coming soon and it is going to be revoluntary…at the very least.

I for one can’t wait.

OK…one more hint. Fall/Winter hair colors will be rich and sophisticated and luscious. If you are thinking about getting thick chunky hightlights….don’t. Highlights and lowlights will be undergoing some changes.

Classic gowns also tend to follow the form-fitting Princess or A-line pattern with vertical seams flowing from the shoulders to the hem and a straight or gently flared skirt. They also tend to have a boat style (bateau) neckline that follows the curve of the collarbone, and is high in both the front and back of the dress. A sweetheart neckline might work as well if it is classic and is combined with a simple, elegant, sophisticated style.

Renee Zellweger defines classic elegance. Not only does she select gowns that perfectly compliment her figure, Renee wears hairstyles that offset her look.

The Osbournes have done a lot to help revive the punk fashion trend, especially Kelly. The key to being punk without looking like you are wearing a costume is to have the right attitude.

While punk can be recreated with lots of black lined and mascara painted eyes, the right swagger has to be present.
